Polavaram: All Set Realise the Dreams of AP People

Hyderabad : With all the juridical and administrative hurdles cleared, the Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) is gearing up to complete the Polavaram Project on a fast track mode. The company is planning and pooling all its resources to complete this prestigious national project within a two-year timeframe. MEIL has experience in completing the many complex projects in the country in the specified timeframe. Now, with extensive engineering expertise, it has begun the project works with jet speed. In the backdrop of a rich experience of completing the most complex Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP), now it has taken up another prestigious national project – Polavaram. By completing within the stipulated time, the company has committed to fulfilling the Andhra Pradesh state’s dreams and benefits. The high court issued a green signal and lifted the stay on the construction of the Polavaram Project on 31st October.

Since all decks were cleared, the state government entrusted the Polavaram Project works to Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited(MEIL). The state government entered an agreement and set a two years deadline to complete the project. The Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy is particular about the completion of the project on war footing basis like Kaleshwaram project in Telangana. As the project works went on a snail pace in the past, he cancelled all the contracts and fresh tenders. He is ambitious about completing the project in two years. The project is intended to stabilising the ayacut and water supply for two crops in a year. The Bhoomi pooja performed by Mr Satish. DGM, MEIL at Spillway block No.18. The state water resources department executive engineer Mr Yesubabu also present at the pooja. The executive engineers Mr. Shekhar Babu, Mr Mallikarjun, Mr Sudhakarbabu, Mr Pandurangaiah and Deputy engineers Mr Rameshwara Naidu, Mr Balakrishna, Mr Laxman, Mr Yashodhara Rao, Mr Srinivas, Mr Shiva Shankar also took part in the pooja. Soon after the agreement Bhoomi pooja, the company will begin its works on 2nd November. On this auspicious occasion of Bhoomi pooja, the irrigation department officials and MEIL engineers and representatives participated.

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Jaganmohan Reddy cancelled the contracts and gone to reverse tendering for Polavaram headworks and hydropower station. In this process, MEIL came forward to take up the works with a 12.6 per cent less amount, i.e., Rs. 4358 crores. With this, the state government saved Rs 628 crores to the exchequer. The state government invited the bid for Rs 4987 crores. MEIL is the sole bidder for the project in the reverse tendering process. MEIL is pooling all its capabilities to complete this multi-purpose project before the deadline.

The Polavaram Project is proposed to supply the irrigation water for 7.2 lakh acres, 960 megawatts hydropower generation and lifting 80TMC of water to the Prakasam Barrage on Krishna river. It also aimed to supply the 23.44 TMC of drinking water to Visakhapatnam. The project will solve the drinking water problem in 540 villages adjacent to the Polavaram Project.

MEIL already began the survey, mobilisation of resources, especially engineering staff and machines. As the flood is almost receded, it is easier to begin the works. The company wants to begin the main reservoir works and the hydropower station works simultaneously. Although there were some main reservoir works initiated, the hydropower station works did not take off. The hydropower station works are at the beginning stage only. In 2005, then chief minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy awarded the headworks, right and left canal works awarded as package wise. He was able to get all the required clearances for the project.
