Justice T.S.Thakur CJI has got emotional in the presence of the Prime minister of India for more judges to be appointed. But the government is inactive in the matter. There are 21,000 judges in the country handling mounting cases. There are only ten judges per10 lakhs of people.

The government is inactive to increase the strength of judges from 21000 to 40,000. The CJI has stated in a choking voice while addressing the inaugural session on a joint conference of chief justices of High courts and CM’s of the states. It may be noted that the law commission has recommended in to increase the strength of the judiciary in the yeaar 2002.The CJI has also recalled  a 1987 the law commission recommendations. Yet the Central government is indifferent and inactive in increasing the number of judges. Therefore it is not only in the name of a litigent or people languishing in jails but also in terms of development and progress of the country. The CJI has besought the P.M. to raise to the occasion and realise that it is not enough to criticise the judiciary and shift the entire responsibility on judiciary. Wiping his eyes three times, the CJI has stated as the P.M. has heard him in rapt attention .

Later Justice T.S.Thakur addressing a press conference says that it is his weakness to get emotional. “One should not be emotional. Justice Kehar who is said to be the next CJI is a strong man and will not be emotional” he added.

Mr. Modi the Prime minister has made a promise to look into the long pending demand of the judiciary to increase the number of judges in order to reduce the work load of mounting cases. He has also stated that whatever may be the compulsions of the past, the matter will be looked into. Mr. Modi has not spoken as per the programme circulated by the law ministry.
